D. Erdenebalsuren, justice of the Supreme Court of Mongolia, whom was elected as a judge of the ICC during the 22nd Session of the Assembly of the State Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) were sworn during an oath ceremony to commence his mandate on March 8 in Hague, Netherlands.


Justice D. Erdenebalsuren was nominated for this role during a conference of justices of the Supreme Court of Mongolia on January 12, 2023. Throughout the year, Justice D. Erdenebalsuren worked closely with the office of the President of Mongolia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other organizations to prepare for this candidature. The 22nd Session of the Assembly of the State Parties to the Rome Statute of the ICC was held in New York, USA, between December 4 to 14, 2023 and Mongolian delegates led by Mr. Amartuvshin.G, Deputy Foreign Minister, attended the Assembly.


As a result of the voting during the conference, Justice D. Erdenebalsuren of the Supreme Court received the highest number of votes from 81 countries out of a total of 114 countries. D. Erdenebalsuren is a justice with more than 10 years of experience in the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court and more than 30 years of experience in criminal proceedings.


The International Criminal Court is a permanent institution that has 18 judges and is seated in Hague, Netherlands. It is responsible for adjudicating crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war and aggression. The Rome Statute, which has been ratified by 123 countries, is the ICC's governing treaty. Mongolia joined the Rome Statute in 2002.
