Justice D.Erdenebalsuren has been elected as a judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC) during the 22nd session of Assembly of the State Parties to the Rome Statute of the ICC by the majority vote.

Justice D.Erdenebalsuren is the first Mongolian to be seated to the ICC by obtaining 81 votes from the States Parties in the 1st round of elections. Following the Supreme Court All Judges’ meeting on 12 Jan 2023, D.Erdenebalsuren was nominated for the candidacy to the ICC and Supreme Court provided full support throughout this election process. Justice Ts.Tsogt is representing Supreme court for the working group established to preparing for this election.

Justice D.Erdenebalsuren is the third candidate nominated for candidacy as a judge of the ICC from Mongolia and this successful result is achieved based on experience gained on the previous elections. The election to the ICC as a judge has been a result of collective efforts by relevant Mongolian institutions led by the President of Mongolia, Office of the President, Supreme Court, Ministry of Foreign Affairs including Permanent Mission of Mongolia to the UN and Embassy of Mongolia in Belgium.

During the 22nd session of Assembly of the State Parties to the Rome Statute of the ICC, six judges will be elected as judges of the ICC and as a result of the second-round election, candidate from Romania was elected by the majority votes. Candidates from Republic of Korea, France, Czech Republic, Burkina Faso, Slovenia, Germany, North Macedonia, Estonia, Madagascar and Tunisia will compete for the remaining 4 seats.

The 22nd session of Assembly of the State Parties to the Rome Statute of the ICC is taking place in New York, USA between 4 to 14 Dec 2023 and Mongolian delegates led by Mr. Amartuvshin.G, Deputy Foreign Minister are attending the ongoing session.
